The 5x optical zoom lens is what it’s all about with this camera, which covers a wide-angle to short telephoto 24-120mm equivalent focal length range and features an f/1.8-2.8 maximum aperture along with image stabilization to benefit handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. The fast maximum aperture also affords greater control over depth of field for working with selective focus. I chose this model as my personal compact camera. You will love the bokeh it can produce.

Canon F 1 Manual
I know several will complain about various aspects of the G5X MkII – people always do. I find it so far to be excellent in most regards. I owned a couple of the Sony RX100 series and always found the user interface cumbersome and the handling awkward. The image quality was good however. I like quality compacts as a backup to my DSLRs or as a good travel camera when not wanting to carry a bunch of gear. To me, the new Canon is near-perfect. First the design. The camera is much more solid than the older G7X or G5X. It feels well built and does have some heft to it. The grip is excellent – both the front grip and the thumb grip on back. Both are rubber and allow very good control. The large ring on the front is for aperture adjustment (at least that’s what I use it for) and it has detents when rotating. The on-off button is too small but I can live with it. The touch-sensitive back screen is great and much more responsive than some I have used. Colors and resolution on the screen are excellent. The pop up viewfinder is a real plus for me – good resolution with no noticeable tearing. I do not like the two-motion operation however. You have to release the viewfinder with the little switch on the side, then pull out the eyepiece (like the older Sony version). New Sony RX100s do this in one motion. Minor nit. This camera has a stacked sensor (first in a Canon compact I think). Autofocus is fast and general handling speed is excellent. My informal test, in decent light, gives me greater than 5 frames/sec – more than fast enough for a compact. I don’t care much about video, but I can say that still IQ is very good – better than a Panasonic DMC-ZS100 I have by quite a margin and as good as an older RX100 III I have (without pixel peeping). Colors are better than the Sony – never have liked the Sony colors much. So for me, the G5X Mark II is a terrific compact that does exactly what I need – fast, good IQ, great handling. Major step forward for Canon in this area.
